Did you know...
Around 1 in 10 people aged 65 or older are thought to experience chronic loneliness at any given time.
With an ageing population, numbers affected are rising to an estimated 12,000 in Somerset
Loneliness can affect both mental and physical health and wellbeing and increases the risk of disability, cognitive decline and the onset of dementia

The tag line for Hurd & Co is Inspired by Nature, Driven by Community.
I always knew I wanted my business to be about more than just profit and set plans in place early on to ensure that as part of my commitment to give back to the community I would support a local charity.
Age UK Somerset was the obvious choice for me because I come from such a huge, loving family (dad was one of 8 and mum one of 9....I have 45 first cousins)
I never knew the meaning of isolation or loneliness until Covid when we were living life in lockdown. Seeing friends and family loose their sparkle, suffer with anxiety and depression through out the pandemic, and unfortunately in some cases still finding days challenging, it became increasingly urgent for me to do something positive to help combat loneliness issues at the same time as supporting Age UK Somerset
I am chuffed to bits to share with you that the very first SIT & KNIT is happening
NEXT WEEK & you're invited
WHAT IS SIT & KNIT?
Meeting weekly I will be running a 'Sit & Knit' project where elderly people within the local community suffering from issues surrounding isolation and loneliness are invited to come together to have a knit and a natter while we share tea, laughter and worries.
Our first session starts 10th May 2022 when we will be knitting mini hats for
For every hat we make Age UK Somerset receives 25p
This is 3 week pilot scheme and I need as many of you to come along as possible.
It's FREE to attend
Everyone is welcome
I will provide the knitting needles & yarn
There's as much tea as you can drink
You can help by
Knit or crochet some mini hats, here's the link to a pattern and some more info about The Big Knit (ageuk.org.uk) including where to drop your hats off or drop them into me.
You can come and meet me, for a cuppa on TUESDAY 10th, 17th or 24th May 10-11.30 at COFFEE NUMBER 1 in Bridgwater, right next door to W H Smith.... the tea's on me!
You can join the Facebook group where we go live every week and knit/crochet together in the comfort of our own home, click here to join the group.
My hope is that the Sit & Knit sessions will continue to provide a little companionship and a break from a long day alone for lots of lovely local people so if you're passing pop in and say hello or if you know of an elderly relative or neighbour who would benefit from the group please encourage them to come along, they don't need to knit they can simply chat and drink tea.

Much love
