About Hurd & Co

Growing up in the small village of Stogursey, in Somerset, surrounded by family and open fields, scrumping apples & playing in hay barns with my cousins, scuffing my knees and riding horses.

I watched my Mum, Nan's and Aunt's (I had 17) knit, natter and occasionally play cards for pennies.

I am Dawn (Hurd) owner, founder and creator of Hurd and Co.

The Co is my fantastic family who help and support me each and every day.

Somerset Stories recently interviewed me on their fantastic podcast.

My Story

I get bored very quickly and have zero patience, so, when I discovered  10mm knitting needles and super chunky yarn

I thought..... I'm gonna learn to knit... OMG have you ever looked at a knitting pattern?

I had no hope so with help from my mum, mother in law and  auntie I learnt the  the basics.

Two years later I had a successful knitwear business, Hurd & Co, and I had won the British Fashion Accessory of the Year Award.....but you know what........

I still can't follow a knitting pattern!

I'm a country girl through and through finding inspiration for my products  out and about, usually whilst walking on the near by Quantock Hills. When designing garments I start with four basic considerations Comfort, Practicality, Simplicity & Style.  My knits are handmade with love, they are meant to be worn daily and fundamentally made to keep you warm.

Everything is made in my attic at home in Somerset with occasional  help from my mum and my teenage kids when it comes to social media, photography and  modelling which they love !!!

My Values

The notion of feeling lonely or isolated is such an alien concept to me as I have, for as long as I can remember, been surrounded by a huge loving family, I have 45 first cousins!

Isolation & loneliness  amongst our friends, family and neighbours is a responsibility I feel we all share and after dealing with  Covid I am positive we all have a much better appreciation and understanding of just how  fragile our mental health can be.

With this in mind I was keen for my business to give  back to vulnerable members of the community who aren't as lucky as me to have a such a large support network.

And so 'Sit & Knit' was born. The aim of Sit & Knit with Hurd & Co is to encourage chatter and laughter, the group was set up as a way to combat loneliness and to raise funds for Age UK Somerset.

Meeting weekly online and face to face with no fees or commitment to do anything other than enjoy yourself, read more about SIT & KNIT Here
